How can we change to a healthy lifestyle? Deciding this of course is not an easy matter. Hey we are talking breaking old habits! and creating healthy ones. Oh dear god! It is most definitely challenging and often discouraging too. Even after saying so I hope you do realise that a change to a healthy lifestyle, is not an impossible goal. We will be changing our diet a little , choosing nutritious clean and wholesome foods perhaps, then tweaking our workout plan, yeah top that with a positive outlook – mom babes we are halfway there! Yup we’ve so got this.
In this post I will be sharing different ways one can adopt to find a healthier and perhaps happier life. Hopefully the plan I have to share today fits your lifestyle needs. I’ve included a link to a short guide on ways to change to a healthy lifestyle.
Make A Plan With Goals And Take Baby Steps
But first here’s why I think goal setting is important. Setting goals gives us something to work for and helps keep us motivated to work hard to change to a healthy lifestyle. By setting goals for ourselves, gives us something to focus on. Additionally, goals allow us to measure progress and see how much you have achieved.
When setting goals, remember though to be realistic and kind with yourself. If you want to quit smoking, lose 10kg and run a marathon – Understand that it’s not going to happen overnight, it might not even happen in a few months or in a year. Yes, most definitely its discouraging if those goals are not met especially going in with a short term success mindset. It can get so discouraging you might even give up altogether. So don’t fall for the “immediate” success, remember all good things come to those who plan, execute and persevere. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Slow and steady work is the key to success – YES over time.
So we are going to start small and focus on one goal at a time to avoid overwhelming ourselves. For instance if you want to lose weight, make small goals on how to do it. Such as working out at least three times best 4 times a week and adding more vegetables to your plate. Keep a journal or track whatever you are feeling, doing and eating somewhere on your phone to make sure you achieve those small goals weekly. When those goals become part of your weekly routine , add a new small goal such as “only eating out twice a week” or adding a weight lifting class to your routine.
These small goals are easier to achieve and will eventually lead to meeting your main goal.
Positive Self-Talk
How we think about ourselves can have a huge impact on how we feel mentally and physically. Negative thoughts can do a lot of harm to our self-confidence and impact those around us as well. So I try to practice positive thinking instead of negative reinforcement and I encourage you to do the same.
Despite what the evil little voice in your head has to say about your appearance, it’s time to replace it with a voice that is loving, reassuring, stronger and most importantly POSITIVE! I believe finding value in yourself is the key to a happier and healthier you.
The Best Exercise For Beginners
Lets get this out there, I think exercise is not a ‘one size fits all’ situation. I have learnt that one of the most important things about initiating a new exercise routine is to make it enjoyable because that way it is easier to maintain this healthy habit towards staying active in your 40s , 50s and beyond. Being consistent is key to seeing lasting results.
I truly believe that it is important to live an active lifestyle at any age. Yes of course getting older is inevitable, but we can always learn tips for avoiding injury while getting in shape, and staying active as the years go by.

Here are some types of exercise you can look up , in my favourite exercise app. SWEAT
- Aerobic: Periods of continuous movement such as running or cycling
- Strength: Focuses on muscle power and building strength such as weightlifting
- High-intensity interval training (HIIT): Short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by low intensity or rest such as boot camps
- Balance or stability: Strengthens muscles while improving body coordination such as pilates
- Flexibility: Maintains range of motion, prevents injuries and aids in muscle recoveries such as yoga
How To Exercise To Lose Weight
If you want to lose weight, try to do at least 200 minutes (more than three hours) a week of moderate intensity exercise. However, If you’re new to exercising start with 50 minutes of exercise a week and work up to 200. Exercising to lose weight, just like eating healthy to lose weight really only comes down to finding something healthy you enjoy and will continue to do. Just like with eating healthy, you’ll want to start small and try new activities that will help you stay active.
If you don’t enjoy running, don’t do it. Find something that you look forward to doing after a long or busy day. Maybe that’s a Zumba class, or an at-home workout, perhaps even a long walk with a friend or a yoga class. The important thing is that you are moving and physically using your body.
The crux of it all, losing weight comes down to being mentally healthy, exercising and being mindful of the foods you are putting in your body. Read my post Lose Weight The Healthy Way for a better understanding on the matter
